What's New

Updates during July 2001

Civil War era boots Diary of Ephraim S. Dodd
Dodd was a former school teacher who served in Company D. His diary presents a day by day account of his activities from December 1862 until his capture in December of 1863. He was unjustly hung as a spy in 1864. This diary represents not only an account of the Ranger's activities, but an account of the last few months of Dodd's short life.
The Reminiscences of J. K. P. Blackburn
Blackburn was another school teacher turned soldier. A member of Company F, he served throughout the war. Originally published in 1918, his firsthand account vividly describes the Ranger's wartime experiences. His perspective is unique in that he advanced from Private to Lieutenant and thus sheds light on the life of enlisted men and officers alike.
Samuel S. Gott
Samuel Gott served as Sergeant in Company A of Terry's Rangers. This is a newspaper clipping recounting his experiences as an early settler in Falls County Texas. Also available is his obituary from 1914.
The Terry Brothers
In this short article, Colonel Shannon recalls the death of two of the bravest Confederate leaders. It comes from the September 30, 1901 edition of the Dallas Morning News.
Tom A. Gill, "One of the Best"
This article by Mary Gill Smith tells the story of Thomas Gill. This remarkable individual served as a Sergeant in Company D. One Ranger roster describes him simply as "one of the best." After reading his story, it is easy to understand why.
The Last Roll: Col. A. M. Shannon
The obituary of Colonel Alexander May Shannon from the Confederate Veteran Magazine of February, 1907. He rose from to First Lieutenant of Company C to its commander as Captain. He was promoted to Colonel and commanded a special detachment, the notorious Shannon's Scouts who opposed Sherman's Troops in their march to the sea. After the war he went on to be a noteworthy businessman.

Brief Site History

Spring 1996
Troy Groves sets up a small page for the Arizona reenacting group "I Company, 2nd Platoon, 8th Texas Cavalry." Gradual growth and discovery of Ranger history leads to numerous revisions and additions to the site between then and 1998.

Winter 1997
Arizona reenacting unit is redesignated as "H Company, Terry's Texas Rangers" and moves to a separate website. New address: http://www.AZReenacting.net/TexasRangers. The Terry Texas Ranger website continues to grow over the next few years as many people make suggestions and contributions.

Winter 2000
Shannon Clyde registers the TerryTexasRangers domains and helps locate a new host for the site. Site moves from http://www.Infomagic.Com/~thgroves/ttr to http://www.TerrysTexasRangers.org. The website undergoes another major redesign. Some new additions include the Claiborne articles provided by Paul Scott and an alphabetical Roster is developed using Mel Wheat's Roster, Claiborne's Roster, the USNPS's Roster, and Paul Scott's Roster. L. B. Giles book is made available online in its entirety. Misty Guille does a major revision and expansion of the Bibliography page.
