Edward James Morriss

June 17, 1827 - ??


 

Born at KY on June 17, 1827.
Raised at MO.
Migrated to TX prior to November 1841.
Fought under Zachary Taylor in the Mexican War, participating in the Battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma, where he was severely wounded.

Mustered into Company K at Houston, TX on September 7, 1861.
Elected 3rd Sergeant.
Present in January 1862.
On October 20, 1862 Governor F. R. Lubbock granted him a commission as 2nd Lt. of the Marines aboard the Steam Vessel Bayou City.

His 1899 pension application states that he served in "… Co. K, 8th Texas Terry Rangers"; he was "…in the Battle of Woodsonville, Ky. and Shiloh in Tennessee"; and that he served in the "Navy on the steam boat Bayou City, in the Battle of Galveston in January 1863."

Resided at San Antonio, Bexar County, TX in 1899.
