THE STATE OF TEXAS

I, S D Calhoun do hereby make application to the Commissioner of Pensions for a pension to be granted me under the Act passed by the 53rd Legislature of the State of Texas, and approved April 7, 1913, on the following grounds:
I enlisted and served in the military service of the Confederate States
during the war between the States of the United States, and that I did not
desert the Confederate service, but during said war I was loyal and true to
my duty, and never at any time voluntarily abandoned my post of duty in the
said service; or (that I was in the service of the State of Texas during
the war, to protect said State against the Indians and Mexicans for more than
6 months). That I was honorably discharged or surrendered Was taken
prisoner near McM[us]ville Tennessee and taken to Camp Matuc, Indiana and
paroled in 1865

that I have been a bona fide citizen of this State since prior to January 1, A.D. 1900, and have been continuously since a citizen of the State of Texas. I do further state that I do not hold any National, State, city or county office which pays me a salary or fees of $300.00 per annum, nor have I an income from any other employment or other source whatever which amounts to $300.00 per annum, nor do I receive from any source whatever money or other means of support amounting in value to the sum of $300.00 per annum, nor do I own in my own right, nor does any one hold in trust for my benefit or use, nor does my wife own, nor does any one hold in trust for my wife, estate or property, either real, personal or mixed, either in fee or for life, of the assessed value of over one thousand dollars, exclusive of a home of the value of not more than $1000.00; nor do I receive any aid or pension from any other State, or from the United States, or from any other source, and that I am not an inmate of the Confederate Home, and I do further state that the answers given to the following questions are true:

3. How long have you resided in Texas? About 70 years
4. In what county do you reside? Dewitt
5. How long have you resided in said county, and what is your postoffice
address? About 70 years. Cuero, Texas
6. Have you applied for a pension under the Confederate pension law and
been rejected? If rejected, state when and where. No
7. What is your occupation, if able to engage in one? Not able to
engage in any occupation What is your physical condition? Afflicted
with Rheumatism
8. In what State was the command in which you served organized? In
Texas
9. How long did you serve? Give, if possible, the date of enlistment
and discharge. Sept 1861 to May 1865
10. What was the letter of you company, number of battalion, regiment
or battery? Company E 8th Texas Cavalry
11. If transferred from one command to another, give time of transfer,
name of command and time of service. Was not transferred.
12. What branch of the service did you enlist in—infantry, cavalry, artillery
or navy? In Cavalry
13. If commissioned direct by the President, what was your rank and line
of duty? Was not commissioned
14. If detailed for special service, under the law of conscription, what
was the nature of your service and how long did you serve? Not detailed
15. What is the assessed value of your home, if you own a home? $1700.00
which includes all property owned by me and there is now a vendor’s lien note
for $700.00 outstanding against said property
16. What is the assessed value of your other property? No other property
17. Have you transferred to others any property of any kind of the purpose
of becoming a beneficiary under this law? No
Wherefore your petitioner prays that his application for a pension be approved and such other proceedings be had in the premises as are required by law.

Before me R J Waldeck, County Judge of DeWitt County, State of Texas, on this day personally appeared J R Calhoun and V W Hardt, who are personally known to me to be credible citizens, who, being by me duly sworn, on oath state that they personally know S D Calhoun, the above named applicant for pension, and that they personally know that the said S D Calhoun has been a bona fide resident citizen of the State of Texas since prior to January 1, A.D. 1900, and that they have no interest in his claim.

Before me, R J Waldeck, County Judge of DeWitt County, State of Texas, on this day personally appeared J R Calhoun and V W Hardt who are personally know to me to be credible citizens, who being by me sworn, on oath state that they are per-
sonally acquainted with the foregoing applicant, and that the facts set
forth and statements made in his application are correct and true, to the
best of their knowledge and belief, and that they have no interest in his
claim, said applicant’s habits are good and free from dishonor. And they
further make oath to the following facts touching the applicant’s service
in the Confederate Army: (State fully your source of knowledge.)
The said J R Calhoun states: I know of my own personal knowledge that
the said S D Calhoun served during the civil war in the Confederate Army.
While we were in different companies we participated in the battles of Shilo,
Murfreesboro and Chickamauga and he came to see me at Rome Georgia where I
was suffering from a wound received in the battle of ‘Murfreesboro.
The said V. W. Hardt states: I served during the civil war in the Confederate army in Co. K. 24th Texas Cavalry. During my service in said war I saw the said S. D. Calhoun in service in the Confederate army near Bellbuckle Tennessee, and from conversations had with said S D Calhoun since said time I feel certain that his statements as to his service are true.

CERTIFICATE OF STATE AND COUNTY ASSESSOR
I, C. T. Schwab- , State and County assessor in the County of De witt State of Texas, do certify that S. D. Calhoun- , or his wife, or his trustee, or trustee for his wife, whose name is signed to the foregoing application for a pension, under the Act of the Thirty-third Legislature, approved April 7, 1913, is charged on the tax rolls of said county with a homestead of the value of Nine Hundred- 1914 rendition- Dollars, and of other property, real or personal, or both of the value of $900- Total- Dollars.

Dear Sir:-
Replying to your favor of January 7th: The records of this Department show that Mortuary Warrant for $30.00 was issued October 18th, 1919 on account of the death of Mr. S. D. Calhoun, Confederate Pensioner, whose death was reported to have occurred Sept. 15th, 1919. No pension warrant may be issued for the quarter in which a pensioner dies. For your information in this connection I am enclosing a copy of the Mortuary Warrant Law of this State. The widow of S. D. Calhoun filed an application for a Confederate pension with this Department December 12th, 1919, which was approved December 13th, with payment to begin December 1st, 1919, the beginning of this quarter. Since her application was not filed earlier than December 12th, it could not be dated to begin earlier than December 1st.
Pension payment for this quarter will be made during the last week in February.
Warrants have been issued for all payments that Mrs. Calhoun is entitled to this date.

Dear Mrs. Huckaby:
The records of this office show S. D. Calhoun of Cuero, DeWitt County, Texas executed an application for Confederate Pension in Texas, on January 26, 1914. At that time he stated he was 79 years old on August 17, 1913 – born in Tennessee. Exact date of birth is not given.
S. D. Calhoun stated he enlisted in 1861 in Company E, 8th Texas Cavalry, Confederate States Army and served until May, 1865. He stated he was taken prisoner near McMusville, Tennessee and taken to Camp Matten, Indiana and paroled in 1865.
The application for Confederate Pension of S. D. Calhoun was approved on affidavits who claimed to have personal knowledge of his service in the Confederate Army. He drew a pension until his death in Cuero, Dewitt County, Texas on September 13, 1919.
Mrs. Nancy E. Calhoun, widow of S. D. Calhoun, also shown as Samuel Daniel Calhoun, drew a Confederate Pension under File No. 36281 DeWitt County, Texas, Mrs. Calhoun stated she was 68 years old on Jan. 23, 1920 – born in Dewitt County, Texas. She was married to Samuel Daniel Calhoun on January 6, 1869 in DeWitt County, Texas. Mrs. Calhoun’s death occurred about October, 1944 in DeWitt County, Texas.

CERTIFICATE OF UNDERTAKER
I, J. L. Sloan, do certify that I am an undertaker in the town of Cuero, County of De Witt, State of Texas, that I had charge of the body of Mr. S. D. Calhoun, who died in the town of Cuero, County of De Witt, State of Texas on the 13th day of September, 1919. That said body was prepared for burial by me on the 13th day of September, 1919. That said body was buried in the Hillside Cemetery, which is located in the County of De Witt State of Texas, and that I am of the opinion that warrant herein applied for should be issued to the said Mrs. S. D. Calhoun, who makes the foregoing application.
