1863.
I 1st Lieut James A Collins of Company "K" 8th Texas Cavalry, do hereby tender this my resignation as an officer in the Confederate States Army, to the Secretary of War. Not being able to perform Military Duty in consequence of a gun shot wound in the right arm, causing a compound fracture, secured at the Battle of Murfreesboro Tenn on the 13th July 1862.

We certify that we have carefully examined the within officer and find him unable to perform the duties of his office in consequence of a gun shot wound to the arm. We therefore respectfully recommend that his resignation be accepted.
