TANTALON,
July 14, 1862—12 o’clock.

Col. J. B. FRY:

Your dispatch received. We have trouble getting over the steep mountain grade; hope to pass it in an hour. Will return the train as directed. Some of my troops have but two days’ rations. My only fear is that the cavalry force may pass to the rear of any force I can concentrate and so cut us off from our supplies. If their force is no larger than reported we can beat them. Will Jackson come up to our line? Was there any rebel artillery or infantry at Murfreesborough?

W. S. SMITH,
Brig. General.
