Ad. Gn. 8th Tx. Cav.

Col,
In obedience to your order of this evening, I proceeded to Elliott's Ferry, stopping on the way to forage as ordered.  When about Two miles or probably some less from Elliott's Ferry, I met the Captain who had been commanding the picket at that place, with his picket with him, who informed me that the Yankees had possession of the ferry, and boat, and were across by that time, that after skirmishing with them awhile, he had been compelled or had given up the ferry.  I also met several pickets on the river road as I went up, who informed me that they had been withdrawn from the river, where they were picketing, and were going in a hurry down the river road towards Andersons Division.  The Captain comdg. at Elliott's Ferry also informed me that the pickets of the 4th [Tenn.?], who were at the same place with him had left there when he did, and had gone up the river.  I was also informed by the pickets being withdrawn from the river that the enemy were on the river road before where the road from your Hd. Qrs. intersects the river road.  Under the circumstances of the case, I have halted at the intersection of the road from your Hd. Qrs. and the river road where I could not be cut off by the enemy above and below me and await your further orders.  I was ordered to support this picket at the ferry Elliott's Ferry and to fall back on the road to Hd. Qrs. where I now am.  From the information of this officer the Yankees must have commenced to cross about the time I was ordered there.  Please let me know what I shall do.

Very Respectfully
Your obt. svt.
