It was a pleasure to inspect this fine Regiment. The Men deserve great credit for the condition in which they keep their horses, and the more so because the greater part of them are not their own but Government property. Out of the whole Regiment there were but 9 horses out of condition, or otherwise unfit for service. 2 were blind and 4 others were incapacitated by age or accident, not one from neglect. I beg to recommend respectfully that those 9 horses and the 32 bridles be supplied without delay. The Men deserve them, for they take care of what they get.
Col. Harrison complains that he cannot feed his Men as he would wish to do, not being allowed to bring his wagons with cooking kettles to the Front. The Men can only toast their Meat.
