Special to THE NEW YORK TIMES.
AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 28.–Samuel Maverick, 99 years old, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward Sammons, here today. Mr. Maverick was a son of the famous Samuel A. Maverick, Texas pioneer and grandfather of Representative Maury Maverick of San Antonio.

Mr. Maverick was born in Pendleton, S. C., and the following year was brought by his parents to San Antonio, where his father entered the practice of law and became a large ranch owner. His stray unbranded calves upon the range gave the name of Maverick to such unclaimed animals.

Samuel Maverick was for many years a prominent banker of San Antonio until his retirement about 1906. During the Civil War he served in Terry's Texas Rangers, a Confederate regiment and he was the last surviving member of that organization.

Four daughters and two sons survive.
