HE'DQ'S WHARTON'S CAV. BRIG.,
Near Shelbyville, Jan. 16, 1863.
EDITOR NEWS:--I herewith hand you a list of the killed, wounded and missing in the Texas Rangers in the engagements around Murfreesboro'. I am induced to send the sad record to you, believing that you can spare a short space in which to pay a tribute to the gallant dead. Men never behaved more nobly than the Rangers did at Murfreesboro'. Lieuts. Sharp and Ellis are in the hands of the enemy, and we trust that they may recover from their wounds. We have no certain intelligence as to the exact nature of their wounds.
Capt. James T. Walker, of Fort Bend county, my Assistant Inspector General, was killed. A brave, noble, or more modest man never breathed the breath of life. Had he lived, Texas would have been proud of her son. I believe he was the most universal favorite in the Regiment.-I tender my heartfelt sympathy to his afflicted family. Truly a goodly branch has been lopped from the family tree. I trust we may soon learn the fate of Lieuts. Ellis and Sharp; they were acting, when last seen, with the greatest gallantry.
You must send your paper to the Regiment as frequently as possible. "News from home" is to us as food in the wilderness to the famishing traveler. For fifteen days the Rangers were engaged every day, with heavy outpost duty each night, yet I have never heard a complaint.
Your's respectfully,
JOHN A. WHARTON,
Brig. Gen. of Cavalry.
