HOUSTON, AUGUST 23, 1862, 2 P.M.

By this arrival we have some, though not very important, news from beyond the Mississippi. The passengers we have spoken with crossed the Mississippi at Vicksburg, by skiffs. We have received Mobile papers to the 18th inst., also some others of a corresponding date.

We are indebted to a passenger for the list of casualties in Terry's regiment in the battle of Murfreesboro.

It is reported that the Government of the U. S. has been officially notified by both England and France, that they have determined to recognize the Confederate States, and that this fruitless and disastrous war must be brought to a close.
