March 1904
At Scotland, Va., at the home of his sister, Mrs. Winnie Briggs, Samuel L. Richards passed peacefully into another world on the 13th of January. He had been in declining health for about a year, but not dangerously ill till a short time before his death.
Comrade Richards left the parenetal roof in 1859, and located in Texas and led an active life till the war brok out. Responding to the call of his adopted State, he served gallantly and bravely for the entire four years as a member of Terry's Texas Rangers. After the war he resumed his previous occupation, but returned to his native State about five years ago, welcomed by friends and relatives. By his request, his Confederate badges and old army pistol were placed in the casket with him, and thus he carried to the grave evidence of devotion to that cause for which he so freely offered up his young manhood.
