T. G. Ivie, Murfreesboro, Tenn., inquires if any members of the Eighth Texas Cavalry (Terry's Rangers) remember Capt. William Newby, who was in command of Company K. Capt. Newby is totally disabled by reason of wounds received in the battle of Knoxville, and is in destitute circumstances. He wishes to apply for a pension from the State if he can establish his identity through two persons who knew him during the war. There are no members of his command living in his country.
Note: The state of Tennessee issued a veteran's pension to William H. Newby of Warren County, TN. His unit is identified as "11th (Holman's) Cav. (Pension # S11054) Mattie Parlee Newby recieved a widow's pension for her husband William Hading Newby (# W9397, Warren County) and Nancy F. Newby recieved a widow's pension for her husband William Newby (# W3925, Warren County). The author of this request may have been mixing up information about the 8th Tennessee Cavalry, Co K (Paul F. Anderson's Cedar Snags) with the 8th Texas cavalry since these two units worked very closely together during the war.
