8th TX Cavalry, CSA List Killed Wounded Died
ca.1865 CSA document in brown ink manuscript pertaining to the casualties
of Co. D, Terry's Texas Rangers. This was probably the most famous cavalry
unit of the entire Civil War. They participated in 125 battles and their record
of success on the field was unsurpassed. Well mounted and armed with Colts
revolvers, doubleguns loaded with buck and ball, and large knives, they struck
fear in the hearts of Union infantry. Their heroic feats were legendary and
many Confederate generals came from their ranks. It is a hand carried folded
letter sheet, measuring approximately 8 by 10 inches and titled "List
of Killed, Wounded, Discharged, in Co. (D) 8th Texas Cav. Front has four columns
titled Killed, Wounded, Died, Discharged/Resigned. It list the names of 20
killed, 31 wounded, 15 died, and 25 discharged or resigned. Verso is addressed
to Mr. George R. Allen, Co. "D" 8th Texas Cav., Terry's Texas Rangers.
Half of the verso is pencil notation about the bygone days and the irreparable
past and the need to look to the future with faith and hope. Payment must
