Confederate Civil War Diary Texas Rangers
This is a 59 page original diary of OSWALD TILGHMAN, while he was a prisoner of war on Johnson's Island in Ohio, during the Civil War.
Oswald Tilghman (1841-1932) of Talbot County Maryland. A descendant of Tench Tilghman, who served with Washington in the Revolutionary War. From 1894-1896, he was the Secretary of State. There is a lot of information on him on the internet. He also wrote several books.
He joined the Terrys Texas Rangers circa 1862, and spent one year as a prisoner of war on Johnson's Island, where he wrote this diary.
Its not a diary of everyday life but a scrapbook of quotations, songs, poems and various verse of his own as well as many other prisoners. Many of these were written and signed by the other prisoners, including their ranks and dates. Alot of them have to do with leaving Johnson's Island in 1864.
The outside condition is pretty good. About the middle of the book, the pages are starting to come loose from the binding. The book measures 6 1/4" x 7 1/2".
