Letters of J. W. Rabb

John Wesley Rabb, b. 1833, d. 1885. His parents were John and Mary (Crownover) Rabb. Attended Rutersville College, Fayette County, Tx. He served during the War between the States as a member of Company F, 8th Texas Calvary (the famed "Terry's Texas Rangers) and attained the rank of Sergeant. He was severely wounded near Knoxville, Tenn. and was was temporarily incapacited. When his regiment evacuated eastern Tennessee, John Wesley Rabb was left behind to recover in a private home. He writes of this ordeal in his letters. He eventually rejoined his unit, evading capture by hiding in the day and traveling at night. He served with his regiment during the remainder of the war. He returned to Fayette County, Texas and married Catherine Moore in 1867. They had a total of eight children: Mina, Jarmon, Edward, John Clay, Sidney, Kathryn, and Wesley. The wounds John Wesley received during the war never properly healed and he took his own life in 1885. His wife died in 1915. Both are buried in LaGrange, Fayette County, Texas.

The above biographical sketch of John Wesley Rabb was taken from THE RABB ODYSSEY, written by Victor C. Wegenhoft (a Rabb descendant). Provided by (also a Rabb descendant).
