J. Love letter to his father - October 20, 1862

Dear father I have
got to the boys I found some of them in very bad health Sam is in good health & has the appearance of a good soldier He has been in several fights since he come over the river The last fight he was in was a very serious one there was 14 wounded & 3 killed out of our CoSam had a hole shot through his cap Joe Prendergast was wounded in the thigh he was the firest one wounded: Ben Kennedy was wounded in the arm John Sharp was wounded in the head. Joe & Ben are seriously wounded & John is dangerously wounded So we hear Our Captain was wounded in the chin & arm we have the braves and best captain in the service. Our horses look very well I swapped Morgan off he was too tender he had fallen away a great deal I got a large one 8 years old I am going to sell him to the artilery for about 300 three hundred & fifty dollars & buy me a good cavalry horse for about three hundred we have heard nothing of Cyrus yet he is away up in Ky or Tenn. Pa I dont know of anything else to write about now Sam is writing he will give you all the news - give my love to Ma & all of the family
