Jas. M & T.A. Loves:
Dear parents:
This leaves me in good health except that I yet have a little cold John W.
has been smartly afflicted with cold which affected his throat very much in
connection with which he had some fever -- he has also had very sore hands
he is a good deal better however at this time. Robt. High and Andrew are complaining
some Andrew had a chill yesturday -- there are about 30 of our company who
were declared not fit for duty Uncle A.C. was left at Clarksville when we
left that place and has never come up having been left in charge of the sick
boys all of whom are not well yet.
I think we are on the eve of a move from this place to some other part of the Globe I do not know and can hardly imagine where Some think we will go to Bolin Green others that will go to Columbus and still others think to Memphis -- My impression however is that the Infantry will be moved somewhere near Columbus and the Cavalry to Bolin Green this is all mere conjecture however [our sick] were moved to Clarkesville yesturday and our Surplus [camp] goods are going that way to day there is a report in camp to day that there was a fight at Bolin Green a few days ago in which we were said to have given the yankees a terrible brushing but the report is not believed
Dr. Riddle of the Waco Co is present -- he says he got a letter from some one in Terry Regiment in which the Regiment is said to have lost about seventy five by disease and that as many more are sick and will likely not be fit for duty this winter. We are made to understand here that the Northern army will not go into Winter Quarters any where else but at Nashville and Memphis. This I guess is another boast like that of Scotts intention to have Richmond and Memphis by the 15th of last July. The paper which bears the name of Louisville Courier which was formerly published at Louisville and now at Bolin Green gives in its last issue an account ot vast numbers concentrating near or at crab Orchard Ky with the design as is supposed of making a descent on bolin Green and thence to Nashville large forces are said to be concentrating about Cairo for the purpose of descending by way of Columbus to Memphis. Kentucky has by her Convention at Russelville seceded from the Old Government and appointed a provisional Government great numbers of the people of this state are Unionists but from what I can learn I believe a considerable majority are for Secession 64 Counties are said to have been represented in the Convention they being considerably more than half the State and a great part of the State not represented on account of the Northern forces having possession of it and it being known that a man dare not exercise the rights of a free man where they have the power -- Maryland has a Legislature of Union men on the sam grounds If we are moved from here I will write you again soon -- I would like exceedingly to know something of the boys what they are doing and where they are
I rec'd a letter from Terissa since I left home in answer to one written to you -- it was the first and last that I have had from home I hear a little something now and then through some other persons letters from near home but nothing from thence -- the Drum has just beat for dress parade and I must quit this letter -- It has been raining for several days with some intermissions
I will write again soon write when you think fit
