The
Online Archive of Personal Letters
Letters
and correspondence are very often an invaluable resource to historians and
they are certainly valuable in studying and understanding Terry's Rangers.
Letters home during the war generally contain a great deal of personal thoughts
and feelings and are written immediately following events. They are often
written to friends and family far away at home so the authors often go into
greater depth and detail about day to day events and the "mundane"
activities experienced as soldiers. Letters written after the war can likewise
be extremely valuable as men share reminiscences and insights tempered with
age and wisdom. They can tell us how these men were effected by the war and
what they regarded as most important in their twilight years.
