Tom Burney was born in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, May 28th, 1842, moved to Texas in July, 1855. Lived in Cass County near Jefferson one year and moved to Limestone County in 1856. My father James L. Burney was born in Morgan County, Georgia, Jan. 11th, 1814. Died Feb., 1872.

James L. Burney, Jr. died in Houston, Texas, Dec. 6th, 1907. Was born in Tallapoosa County, Ala., 1846.

Tom Burney was born in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, May 28th, 1842. Moved to Texas in July 1855, and have lived here ever since except while I was in the Army of Tennessee, fighting for what I thought was right. I joined the 8th Texas, or Terry's Texas Rangers, on Sept. 16th, 1861, and went to Bowling Green, Ky., where I say my first service under Sydney Johnston. Was in all the battles fought by that army and we did a lot of picket duty for the army when other troops were resting. I was under Forrest, Wharton, Wheeler, Morgan and other cavalry leaders of less note. Was with Joe Johnston at Greensboro, N.C., but left for Georgia before he surrendered. I got home in July, 1865, having been gone nearly 4 years.

I was married Oct. 6th, 1879 to Miss Mary A. Wimbish, still living in Limestone. We raised quite a family, 7 living, one dead and buried on Honest Ridge near our old home.

Yours,
Tom Burney
