George Bernhard Zimpelman

July 24, 1832 - January 1, 1908


 

Born at Bavaria, Germany on July 24, 1832.
Classically educated.
Came to New Orleans, LA in 1846.
Came to TX in 1847 and settled in Austin.
Married Sarah Katherine Matthews of Austin in 1856.
Resided at Austin, Travis County, TX in 1860 with wife and two children; occupied as a farmer.
Described as 5'9" with dark hair, dark complexion, and dark eyes.

Mustered into Company D at Houston, TX on September 7, 1861.
Promoted/appointed to armorer by November 1862.
Accidentally injured due to fall from 2-story house near Alexandria, TN in April 1863.
Present in February 1864 as master armorer.
Received gunshot wound to body and arm in August 1864 (or possibly on July 30, 1864), likely near Newnan, GA.
Promoted to First Lieutenant.
Wounded nine times and captured at Atlanta (possibly).
Captured near Alpharetta, GA in September 1864.
Forwarded to Johnson's Island, OH in October 1864.

Elected Sheriff of Travis County, TX in 1866 but was deposed by military authority.
Reelected in 1869, 1871, 1873, and 1876.
Went into Banking.
Served as the Postmaster of Austin, TX.
Moved to El Paso, TX after 1886.
Died at Austin, TX on January 1, 1908.
Buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, Travis County, TX.

His ranch along the Perdanales River was later owned by President L. B. Johnson.
