Born near Union Village, Union County, SC on August 24, 1833.
Resided at Noxubee County, MS between 1849-1858.
Joined his family in TX by 1858.
Possibly resided at Clinton, DeWitt County, TX in 1860.
Described as 6', dark hair, dark complexion, and hazel eyes.
Acted as 1st Lieutenant of the "DeWitt Rifles" in
May 1861 (possibly enlisted at Houston, TX).
Mustered into Company E at Houston, TX on September 12, 1861.
Elected 1st Lieutenant on January 9, 1862.
Promoted to Captain on November 18, 1862.
Captured at the battle of Chickamauga (near McMinnville, TN?) on Oct. 4, 1863.
Forwarded to Johnson's Island, OH (Lake Erie) & imprisoned there for 18
months.
Released near Sandusky, OH on June 12, 1865.
Paroled at Victoria, TX on August 8, 1865.
Married Elizabeth E. Sheppard Powell on April 6, 1869 at Matagorda,
TX.
Maried Laura Francis Bowie on November 15, 1875 at Matagorda, TX.
Served in the Texas State Legislature; his picture is in the State Capitol downstairs.
Died at Brookshire, TX on March 28, 1915, at the age of 81.
Buried at Bowie Cemetery, Cedar Lane, Matagorda County, TX.
Obituary: Capt. James Knox White age 82, died at Brookshire, Tex. Mon. Burial at Bowie Cem. on Caney. Born SC and came to Tex. at age 18. Married Miss Laura Bowie, 2 children: Bowie White and Mrs. Pere. MCT Apr 9, 1915.
