John Austin Wharton

July 3, 1828 - April 6, 1865


 

Born near Nashville, TN on July 3, 1828.
Married Eliza Penelope Johnson in 1848.
Attended South Carolina College where he served as a commander in the corp of cadets.
Practiced law with Clint Terry in Brazoria, TX.
Resided at Columbia, Brazoria County, TX in 1860 with wife, one child, and his mother; occupied as a lawyer and planter.
He was a Breckinridge presidential elector in 1860.

Represented Brazoria County at the state Secession Convention.
Met with Jefferson Davis in Richmond, VA between June 21 & 23,1861 along with Thomas S. Lubbock, Louis T. Wigfall, James Longstreet, Thomas N. Waul, and Benjamin F. Terry.
Commissioned to raise a company of calvary on August 12, 1861.
Captured aboard the schooner Shark by Union steamer South Carolina on July 4, 1861.
Mustered into Company B at Houston, TX in September 1861.
Elected Captain of Company B, November 1861.
Elected Colonel of Regiment in January 1862.
Received wound to right leg during the Sunday afternoon encounter with the enemy near the boggy ravine at Shiloh, TN on April 6, 1862.
On furlough.
Received gunshot wound to left arm at Murfreesboro, TN on July 13, 1862.
Promoted to Brigadier General in November 1862.
Promoted to acting Major General by March 1863.
Received accidental wounds to knee and foot when horse ran near a tree, near Sparta, TN in May 1863.
Promoted to Major General in November 1863.
Transferred to the Trans-Mississippi Department in January 1864, departing in March 1864.
Commanded cavalry in the Red River Campaign.
Killed in private altercation with Colonel George W. Baylor at Houston (or Hempstead), TX on April 6, 1865.

Buried in the State cemetery at Austin.

John A. Wharton

Came to Texas from Tennessee. Prominent Orator, Jurist, and Prosecutor. Delegate Texas Secession Convention 1861. Joined Confederate Army as Captain Company “B” Terry’s Texas Rangers. After Terry was Killed Wharton Elected Colonel and Led this Famous Regiment Battle Shiloh and Kentucky Campaign 1862. Twice Wounded and Made Brigadier General for Bravery in Action. Promoted Major General 1863 after brilliant Fighting Chickamauga Campaign. Gallantry Led Cavalry Corps Red River Campaign to Prevent Invasion Texas 1864.
