John Henry Washington

October 3, 1840 - August 15, 1926


 

Born at AL on October 3, 1840.
Moved to Travis County, TX in 1845.
Resided at Webberville, Travis County, TX in 1860 with parents and 7 siblings; occupied as a student.

Mustered into Company D at Houston, TX on September 7, 1861.
Shot through both thighs and left behind while dismounted during the engagement with the enemy's reserve forces at Shiloh, TN on April 7, 1862.
Left behind at a house as the Confederates retreated.
Captured and forwarded to Union hospital at Camp Denison, OH.
Forwarded to Camp Chase, OH in June 1862.
Exchanged at Vicksburg, MS in August 1862.
Discharged in October 1862 due to battle wounds.

He was assisted in surviving life in a Prisoner of War camp with gold coins his mother had sewn into the buttons of an overcoat she had given him at his enlistment.

Reenlisted after recovering from wounds.

Married Ladoria "Dona" Madeline Rector on December 2, 1869.

Died on August 15, 1926 at Ganado, Jackson County, TX.
Buried at Rector Cemetery in Manor, TX. (The tombstone incorrectly identifies him as "John R. Washington.")

Brother-in-law to Kenner K. Rector, Co. D, and John B. Rector, Co. D. Also related to Ladoria's cousin, Thompson M. Rector, Co. D.
