Richard Allison Torrance
December 7, 1833 - May 22, 1927
Born at Hopewell, Mecklenburg County, NC on December 7, 1833.
Attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill from 1851 to 1855.
Emigrated to Texas in 1856 and purchased 640 acres on the Brazos River in
Fort Bend County.
Married Bettie E. Reid on November 26, 1857.
Resided at Richmond, Ft. Bend County, TX in 1860 with wife and two children;
occupied as a farmer and owned 19 slaves.
Mustered into Company H at Corinth, MS on April 1, 1862, by
Lieutenant Weston.
Received slight stomach wound at Murfreesboro, TN on July 13, 1862.
Absent in August 1862.
Present in December 1862.
Received wound to left leg, resulting in amputation, at Mossy Creek, TN on
December 26, 1863.
Hospitalized at Charlottsville, VA in April 1864.
Hospitalized at Charlotte, NC in October 1864, possibly in his parents' home.
Married Patience Eliza Gaston on October 3, 1865, and had nine children.
Elected County Commissioner in Fort Bend County, TX in 1866.
He sold his Texas plantation and returned to Mecklenburg County, NC in 1868
or 1869.
Died on May 22, 1927 in Cedar Grove, NC.
