Oswald Tilghman

March 7, 1841 - June 17, 1932


 

Born at Plinhimmon, near Oxford, Talbot County, MD on March 7, 1841.
Attended Maryland Military Academy at Oxford, Tablot County, MD.
Resided at Austin, Travis County, TX.
Washington Co., TX

Mustered into Company B at Houston, TX on September 7, 1861.
Present in October 1861.
Possibly discharged by substitution in April 1862.
Possibly promoted to Lieutenant in B. F. White's artillery battery.
Aide-de-Camp to his kinsman Maj. Gen Lloyd Tilghman CSA.
Commanded the Rock City Artillery of Nashville, TN during the siege of Port Hudson, LA.
Captured and forwarded to Johnson's Island, Lake Erie, OH to end of war.

After the war, studied law under Senator Charles H. Gibson.
Admitted to the bar in 1875.
Occupied in the business of real estate and the practice of law.
Married Belle Harrison in 1884.
Acted as auditor of Circuit Court of Talbot County from 1886 to 1906.
Represented Talbot County in the MD Senate from 1894 to 1896.
Assisted in establishing the STate Bureau of Immigration in 1896.
Acted as president of Board of Development of the Eastern Shore of MD.
Acted as Secretary of State of MD from 1904 to 1908.
Resided at Foxley Hall, Easton, Talbot County, MD.
Died at his home on June 17, 1932.

During his lifetime, authored three works: History of Annapolis, Memoir of Lieut.-Col. Tench Tilghman, and History of Talbot County, Maryland.
