Benjamin Franklin Terry

February 18, 1821 - December 17, 1861


 

Colonel - Terry's Texas Rangers

Born in Russellville, KY on February 18, 1821.
His family moved to Mississippi where his parents seperated.
In 1833 his mother moved the family to Texas.
When his mother passed away in 1837, her brother, Benjamin Fort Smith became the Terry Children's guardian.
When Maj. Smith passed away in 1841 he took over responsibility of managing the family plantation.
On October 12, 1841, he married Mary Bingham.
Resided in Fort Bend County, Texas.
In 1851 he partnered with William Kyle to contract for the building of the first railroad in Texas.
In 1852 he purchased the Oakland Sugar Plantation and became a succesful suger planter.
In January 1861 he was elected as a delegate to the Texas Secession convention.
In Feb. and Mar. 1861 he was an officer in the campaign to disarm Federal troops in TX.
He set out for Richmond to offer his service to the Confederacy in early 1861.
He served as a volunteer aide to Gen. Longstreet at the Battle of First Manassas in April 1861 where he was appointed Colonel..
Met with president Jefferson Davis in Richmond, VA between June 21 & 23,1861.
Granted authority to raise a cavalry regiment he and Lubbock returned to Texas and issued a call for volunteers on August 12, 1861.
The regiment was sworn into service in September 1861 and proceeded to Kentucky.
The regiment was officially organized in November 1861 and elected as Colonel.
He was killed at Woodsonville, Kentucky (Rowlett's Station) on December 17, 1861 while leading the Rangers in their first battle.
Col. Terry's Body was held in state in Nashville and New Orleans before being returned to Houston Texas.
Terry county, Texas is named in his honor.
Buried in the Glenwood cemetery, Houston, TX.
