Born in Marengo County, AL around 1821.
Resided in Gonzales County, TX; occupied as a stockraiser.
Described as 6'___" with red hair, light complexion, and light eyes.

Mustered into Company E at Houston, TX on September 12, 1861.
Discharged with a useless arm near Bardstown, KY in September 1862 or at Knoxville, TN on November 1862.

Returned to Gonzales County, TX to work as a rancher.
Fathered 8 children.
Died January 20, 1886.

At his death a fellow Ranger wrote: "The death of Alexander Henry Sample, in Gonzales County, merits more than a passing notice from friends with whom he lived for more than a quarter century; his character being at all times that of a high toned gentleman, a kind neighbor, an affectionate husband and father and a patriotic citizen."
