James Francis Miller

August 1, 1832 - July 3, 1902


 

Born at TN on August 1, 1832. (Congressional Biography lists location as Winnsboro, Fairfield District, SC in 1830.)
Moved to TX with family in 1845.
Attended Rutersville College, near La Grange, TX.
Occupied as a teacher at Gonzales, Gonzales County, TX.
Studied law and admitted to bar in 1854.
Admitted to practice before TX Supreme Court in 1855.
Opened law practice at Gonzales, Gonzales County, TX in 1857.
Married Elmyra (Almira) Matthews in 1860.

Mustered into Company I at Gonzales, TX on April 9, 1862 by Lt. Harris.
Reached regiment in summer 1862.
Detached to Brig. Genl. Wharton's commissary department as Commissary Sergeant by August 1862 to at least February 1864.
Captured and later paroled at Charlotte, NC.
Member of Terry Lodge, Regimental Masonic Chapter.

Married Julia Amanda Turner Batchelor on May 6, 1867 or May 10, 1868.

Retired from law practice in 1868.
Served on the Masonic Committee on Work in 1868 with William M. Taylor, Benjamin A. Botts, John B. Jones, & C. K. Stribling.
Founded a banking house at Gonzales, Gonzales County, TX with William B. Sayers.
Acted as first president of Texas Banker's Association.
Began raising stock.
Served as the first president of the Texas Live Stock Association.
Acted as representative in the U. S. Congress from 1883-1887.

Died at Gonzales, TX on July 3, 1902.
