Samuel Maverick, Jr.

May 14, 1837 - February 28, 1936


 

Born at Montpelier Plantation near Pendleton, SC on May 14, 1837.
Emigrated with family to San Antonio, Bexar County, TX on June 15, 1838.
Began college in Scotland in 1856, graduating about a year before the War began.
Resided in San Antonio in 1860 with his parents and five siblings, occupied as a farmer.
Member of prominent San Antonio, TX family.

Joined Company B of Colonel Henry McCulloch's 1st TX Mounted Rifles, in 1861.
Mustered into Company G at Middle TN (probably) on May 9, 1862.
Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in February 1863, after he swam into the Cumberland River to ignite an enemy gunboat.
Member of Wharton's Scouts by March 1863, and may have served in KY.
Claiborne indicates he was sounded in November 1863 and later captured.
Member of Shannon's Scouts.
Surrendered with Company G under Joseph E. Johnston at Goldsboro, NC on April 7, 1865.

Returned to San Antonio after the war.
Passed the Texas bar exam in 1867.
Ran a lumberyard and general store in 1879.
Built the Maverick Bank in 1884, but it failed by about 1892.

Witnessed A. J. Smith's aaplication for a Texas Confederate Pension.

Died February 28, 1936, the last member of Terry's Texas Rangers.
Buried at Mission Burial Park in San Antonio, Bexar County, TX.
