William Erastus Moore

October 26, 1837 - June 5, 1902


 

"He has a brave and efficient soldier and very popular with the regiment." - Hays Yarrington

Born in Rahway, NJ on October 26, 1837.
Moved with family to Mobile, AL in 1840.
Emigrated to Victoria County, TX in 1845.
Moved to Indianola, TX around 1848.
Wounded in a hunting accident when he was about 16.
Left school at age 17 to work as a cowboy.

Mustered into Company K at Houston, TX on September 7, 1861.
Suffered gunshot through the hip at Murfreesboro, TN on July13, 1862.
Regained regiment in November 1862.
Promoted to 4th Sereant by December 1863.
Present in February 1864.
Served with Shannon's Scouts.
Located at Middle TN at war's end.
During the war he had three horses killed under him.

Returned home in August 1865 and began rounding up cattle.
Married Augusta Butterfield on May 24, 1866.
His wife, "Gussie," died in 1868.
Married Mary C. Swift on December 15, 1869.
Purchased a boat and began hauling freight in 1872.
Joined the Methodist church in August 1875.
His wife, Mary, died on December 17, 1878 at age 33.
Married his brother's widow, Kate A. Seaman Moore on June 5, 1881.
Worked in the mercantil business with his brother at Demings Bridge in 1882.
Moved to his ranch in Ashby, TX in 1891.
Credited with naming the community of Ashby, TX.
Operated a store and served as Postmaster in Ashby, TX.
Wrote to the Confederate Veteran from Ashby, TX in 1897.
Attended the 1898 Ranger reunion in Austin, TX.
Member of the Masonic Lodge.

Died suddenly on June 5, 1902 at Ashby, Matagorda County, TX.
Buried in the Ashby cemetery, Matagorda County, TX.
