William H. Jenkins

March 31, 1838 - ??


 

Born at Winchester, TN on March 31, 1838.
Joined maternal grandfather's family (with mother and brothers) in 1848 after his father died.
Moved with family to La Grange, Fayette County, TX in 1854.
Moved with family to Burleson County, TX in 1855, where grandfather opened plantation (near Caldwell).
Sent to southwest TX in 1859 due to ill health.
Resided at Bexar County, TX (according to Jones Roster).
Occupied as a clerk in a mercantile house.
Traveled to Mexico in 1860 as part of his duties as clerk, but returned when war began.
Acted on frontier duty under General Henry McCulloch for eight months, in service against Comanche Indians along the Pecos, Neuces, Rio Grande, and headwaters of Colorado River.
Joined the Masons at Athens, GA, under dispensation from the Grand Lodge of TX.
Returned to central TX.

Mustered into Company G at Houston, TX on September 16, 1861.
Elected 4th Corporal.
Reduced in rank to private by August 1862.
Transferred to staff of Brigadier General Wharton in November 1862.
Present in March 1864.
Promoted to Regimental Commisary, with rank of Captain, by August 1864.
Participated in last engagement on Haw River, near Guilford Court House, NC on April 14, 1865.

After the war, returned to his home at Burleson County, TX on July 5, 1865.
Purchased land on the Brazos bottoms and began farming.
Married Mary R. Lipscomb in 1866.
Moved to Caldwell, Burleson County, TX in 1882.
Began lumber business in 1883.
Joined with brother Alpheus G. Jenkins in 1884 in lumber business, under name of Jenkins & Jenkins.
