Thomas McKinney Jack

December 19, 1831 - August 26, 1880


 

Born at San Felipe de Austin, Travis County, TX on December 19, 1831.
Moved with family to Brazoria County, TX in 1834.
Attended Georgetown College at KY (briefly) before graduating with honors from Yale University in 1853.
Returned to TX and studied law with his brother-in-law William Pitt Ballinger.
Admitted to the bar at Galveston, TX in 1855.
Elected probate judge of Galveston County, TX in 1856.
Married Nannie Mills Knox in 1857.
Elected to House of Representatives in 1858 after the resignation of John Henry Brown.
Resided at Galveston, Galveston County, TX in 1860 with wife and two children; occupied as a lawyer.

Participated in Ft. Brown expedition in Spring 1861.
Mustered into Company B at Houston, TX on September 7, 1861.
Promoted to 1st Lieutenant and transferred to staff of General A. S. Johnston in December 1861 as aide-de-camp.
General A. S. Johnston died in his arms after being mortally wounded at the battle of Shiloh on April, 6, 1862.
Promoted to Major and named Adjutant General of Lt. Gen. Leonidas Polk's corps of the Army of Tennessee in April 1862.
Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel before June 14, 1864.
Promoted to Colonel and transferred to staff of Brigadier General J. E. Harrison's staff in Trans-Mississippi Department.
Named Adjutant General of TX.
Along with his uncle, Brigadier General J. E. Harrison, acted as member of delegation that surrendered TX to Federal forces at Galveston at the end of the war.

After the war, returned to legal practice.
Acted as delegate to the national Democratic convention in July 1880.
Died at Galveston, Galveston County, TX on August 26, 1880 due to pneumonia.
