Charles Henry Howard

February 3, 1842 - December 17, 1877


 

Born at VA in 1842.
Resided at Hallettsville, Lavaca County, TX in 1860 with parents and up to ten siblings; occupied as a laborer and student.
Described as 5'9" with black hair, dark complexion, and gray eyes.

Mustered in with Comany F at Houston, TX on September 7, 1861.
Transferred to Company I by December 1861.
Transferred to Company D by April 1862.
Suffered gunshot to the chest and shoulder during the engagement with the enemy's reserve forces at Shiloh, TN on April 7, 1862.
Received furlough to TX or VA to recover.
Returned to regiment about September 1862.
Transferred to Wharton's Scouts in January 1863.
Thought to have been killed near Franklin, TN when he was with Wharton's Scouts in April 1863.
Absent on "secret scouting service" from August 1863 to October 1863.
Detached (apparently still as scout) in February 1864.
Captured at Wilson County, TN in January 1865.
Forwarded to Camp Chase, OH.
Paroled at Camp Chase, OH on June 13, 1865.

Settled in Austin, TX in 1870 or 1871.
Moved to El Paso, TX in 1872.

Appointed district attorney in 1873.
Appointed to replace El Paso district judge (with who's removal he had assisted) in April 1874.
Resigned as district judge in 1875.

Married Louisa Zimpleman at Austin, TX on December 31, 1875.

Shortly before wife's death in June 1877, filed on salt deposits in his father-in-law's name (George B. Zimpleman, Co. D); outraging the salt dealers of El Paso who regarded the salt deposits as a public commodity.

Returned to El Paso, TX on October 7, 1877.
Shot and killed Louis Cardis on October 10, 1877.
Arraigned for murder on November 17, 1877; freed on bail of $4,000.
Returned to San Elizario on December 12, 1877, to prosecute persons who refused to pay the fee for collecting salt; he and escort of Texas Rangers were surrounded by an angry mob for several days; Howard gave himself up and was shot by a firing squad from the Mexican side of the river.
Buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, Travis County, TX.
