Nathan Worley Grant

December 11, 1831 - August 16, 1883


 

Born at Washington County, VA on December 11, 1831.
Graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1851.
Traveled to Australia for gold rush.
Returned to U.S. in 1855, and acted as engineer and surveyor for a RailRoad at Lookout Mountain, TN.
Taught in MO.
Moved to Collin County, TX around 1857.
Resided at Springfield, Limestone County, TX in 1860; occupied as a teacher.
Described as 5'11" with light hair, fair complexion, and blue eyes.

Mustered into Company C on either November 7 or 11, 1861 at Bowling Green, KY by Captain Evans.
Served closely with friend William Perry, Co. C, as recorded in Grant's letters.
Dislocated left arm in December 1861.
Wounded at Shiloh, TN in April 1862.
Discharged in October 1862 due to rheumatism, likely as a result of dislocated arm.

Married Josephine Elizabeth Tipton, possibly in 1862, and had seven children.

Moved to Grandview, Johnson County, TX in 1869.
Moved to Taylor County, TX shortly after 1880.
Died on August 16, 1883.
Buried at Bluff Creek Cemetery, Taylor County, TX.

Letters to Josephine Tipton mention John Holloway, Co. C, William Perry, Co. C, Clinton Terry, and T. S. Lubbock; also describes the battle of Shiloh, the mammoth cave events, and other events.
