Born in 1836 in Clark County, KY.
Moved with family to Missouri in 1838.
Moved with family to Texas in 1845.
Worked for uncle, James M. Foster, in the shipping business in 1857, along
with brother Joseph Collins.
Became partner with uncle (and brother) in 1859.
Mustered in with Company K in Houston on September 7,1861
Elected 1st Lieutenant by February 1862.
Wounded (gunshot causing compound fracture, right arm) at Murfreesboro, TN
on July 13, 1862.
Left near Murfreesboro to recover until at least September 1862.
Resigned as 1st Lieutenant in May 1863 at Houston, TX.
