John Marshall Claiborne

February 27, 1839 - April 20 or 28, 1909


 

Born in Gibson County, TN on February 27, 1839.
Reared in Bastrop County, TX
Educated at Baylor University at Independence, Washington County, TX.
Resided at Austin, Travis County, TX in 1860, occupied as a clerk.

Mustered into Company D at Houston, TX on September 7, 1861.
Travelled (apparently) to VA during winter 1861-1862 while ill.
Promoted Sergeant Major by March 1862.
Appointed to Adjutant on December 31, 1862.
Claiborne indicates he was wounded three times.
Received one of these wounds to arm or shoulder at Cassville, GA on May 24, 1864.
Acted in "secret service" behind enemy lines at TN from July 1864 until at least December 1864.
In January 1865 Gen. Hood reportedly gave him a release and letters to President Davis and recommended him with commendation for Brigadier General.
Reported to have served as a General at Mumfordville, KY and Bentonville, NC.

Married Susan Mary Phillips on January 8, 1865 in Cedartown, Polk County, GA.
Served as a Major General of Texas State Troops from 1884 to 1890.
Member of the Texas State Senate 1887 - 1890.
Listed in the 1894-1895 Houston, TX Directory as boarding at the Spencer House.
Listed as a fruit grower and farmer in the Galveston, TX City Directory for 1888-1891.
Wife Sue Claiborne died at Rusk in January 1900.
Married Ella Halbrook February 3, 1901 in Cherokee, Rusk County, TXs.
Attended the 1902 Terry's Texas Rangers Reunion in Dallas.
Died on April 28, 1909 in Rusk, Cherokee County, TX.
Buried in the Cedar Hill Cemetery Rusk, Cherokee County, TX, with his first wife Sue Phillips, their daughter Harriette, and Harriette's two children.

Bastrop attorney for over forty years. His mother was Mary Crawford Claiborne. John's aunt (his father's sister) married Jesse Maxwell of Tennessee. Their daughter, (John M.'s cousin) Harriett married Colonel John Overton. It was their home, Traveller's Rest--just outside of Nashville--that served as a hospital and resting place for Confederate soldiers. Following the war John M. named his daughter Harriette Overton Claiborne. John M.'s uncle (his mother's brother) was Cpt. Jesse Billingsley, veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. Leading his company into battle, Cpt. Billingsley was quoted to have yelled, "Remember Goliad, remember the Alamo."
