Born at Lowndes County, AL on July 3, 1835.
Moved to TX on his own in 1850.
Worked in drugstore while studying law.
Married Eliza Jones on July 13, 1853.
Admitted to the Bar in 1855.
Clerk of district court of Fort Bend County, TX.
Served as county judge from 1856 to 1858.
Resided at Fort Bend County, TX in 1860 with wife and three children; also resided with J. Thompson, Co. H, and L. Herbert, Co. H.

Mustered into Company H at Houston, TX on September 7, 1861.
Acted as Ordnance Sergeant.
Promoted to 1st Sergeant by October 1861.
Absent to VA by November 1861 to at least December 9, 1861.
Promoted to Captain by January 1862.
Wounded when his right leg was broken by a musket-ball in the charge at Fallen Timbers near Shiloh, TN on April 8, 1862.
Received 30-day furlough.
Commanded regiment as Captain in January 1863.
Promoted to Major by February or March 1863.
Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel by June 1863.
Promoted to acting Colonel by July 1863.
Received gunshot wounds to right arm and hand at Farmington, TN in October 1863.
Noted to be recovering in GA in March 1864.
Served as a Junior Deacon in the Terry Masionic Lodge.
Commanded brigade in October 1864.
Received wounds (mini ball through the right ankle) at Griswoldville or Buckhead Church, GA in November 1864.
Received wounds to right shoulder (the ball lodged in his lung) at Bentonville, NC in March 1865.
Promoted to Colonel by March 1865.
Member of Terry Lodge, Regimental Masonic Chapter.

After the war, returned to TX to practice law.
Acted as delegate to the Philadelphia Peace Convention in 1866.
Served in TX State Legislature in 1870.
Acted as judge in Galveston and Harris Counties District Criminal Court from 1874-1888.
Lost TX gubernational race to James Hogg in 1890.
Moved to San Marcos, Hays County, TX in 1892 due to ill health.

Died at San Marcos, Hays County, TX in 1897.
