Simeon Robert Bruce
December 3, 1839 - May 9, 1900
Born at Port Mills, Orange County, VT on December 3, 1839.
Left home in 1855 and lived for a while in Kane County, IL.
In fall 1859, moved to Montgomery County, TX, then went to Gonzales, Gonzeles
County, TX.
Mustered into Company E at Houston, TX on September 12, 1861.
Furloughed for unknown reason and scheduled to return May 1862.
Absent on duty with quartermaster department by June 1862.
Received gunshot wound to calf of leg at Perryville, KY in October 1862, and
left in enemy hands.
Another source reports that he was left with his brother, GH Bruce, to recuperate,
and when the brothers wrote to VT for some money and learned that two of their
brothers were fighting on the Union side.
Captured at Harrodsburg, KY in October 1862.
Exchanged at Vicksburg, MS in December 1862.
B. F. Weems Papers indicate he was assigned to saddle shop on October 8, 1862.
Published as deserter May 30, 1863.
On duty with quartermaster department by October 1863.
Paroled in Tuscaloosa, AL on May 22, 1865.
Resided in Oglethorpe, GA after the war.
SR Bruce and GH Bruce married two sisters in Macon County, GA.
Married Catherine Ann Reeves on November 14, 1865.
The brothers returned to TX in October 1866, bringing in-laws with them.
Settled in Hunt County, TX.
Moved to Mineola, Wood County, TX in January 1874 (resided on Johnson Street).
Operated a hotel for three years, then got a job as bookkeeper.
Occupied as cashier at Bank of Mineola after its founding.
Became partner in firm of S. R. Bruce & Co.
Acted as city treatsurer of Mineola, TX for four years.
Was a Mason.
Died at Mineola, Wood County, TX on May 9, 1900, leaving five
children.
Buried at Mineola City Cemetery, Mineola, Wood County, TX.
