George H. Bruce

Born in Orange County, VT on April 23, 1841.
Moved to Montgomery County, TX in fall 1859, then went to Gonzales, Gonzeles
County, TX.
Possibly resided in Gonzales County, TX in 1860.
Mustered into Company E at Houston, TX on September 12, 1861;
age 20 and equipment valued at $20.
Listed as Present on December 31, 1861 Muster Roll.
Sent ill to Rome, GA by June 1862.
Promoted to 2nd Sergeant by November 1862.
Another source reports that his brother, SR Bruce, was left with him to recuperate
from battle wounds, and when the brothers wrote to VT for some money and learned
that two of their brothers were fighting on the Union side.
Captured at Harrodsburg, KY in October 1862.
Exchanged at Vicksburg, MS in December 1862.
One source indicates he was wounded at Shelbyville, TN and at Cumberland Mountain,
TN.
Received wound to shin near Fosterville, TN on June 24, 1863.
Hospitalized for illness by February 1864.
B. F. Weems Papers indicate GH was assigned
to saddle shop, date unknown.
Married Margaret Janes Reeves on June 14, 1865 in Oglethorpe,
Macon County, GA.(He and his brother married two sisters.)
The brothers returned to TX in October 1866, bringing in-laws with them.
Resided in Hunt County, TX.
Moved to Rains County, TX in 1873.
Resided in Van Zandt County, TX by 1880.
Listed as Commandant of John H. Morgan Camp, No. 107, United Confederate Veterans,
Ardmore, Indian Territory, on March 20, 1896-97.
Attended 1902 Terry's Texas Rangers reunion.
Moved to Ardmore, Carter County, OK at some point.
Acted as City Clerk and Clerk of the School Board of Ardmore.
Appointed by OK governer as member of board of trustees for the Oklahoma Confederate
Home on March 6, 1911.
Died in Ardmore, OK on March 20, 1919.
Buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, Ardmore, Carter County, OK.
