Royston Whatley Brooks

Born in Paulding County, GA in 1839.
Resided with family in Choctaw County, MS in 1850.
They settled in Texas in 1851.
Resided at Limestone County, TX in 1860.
Mustered into Company C at Houston, TX on Septemebr 12, 1861.
Present from Septeber 12 to October 31, 1861, with the following notation,
"RW Brooks sick at Columbus, KY. Furlough granted till he recoversby
Capt. Evans, Oct. 22, 1861."
Listed as "absent" during November and December 1861 with the following
notation, "Brooks, RW absent sick at Columbus, KY."
Married Martha Clayton in Palo Pinto, TX on January 23, 1862.
Absentduring July and August 1862.
Paid by Captain Steel on December 31, 1862.
Present from February 18 to April 30, 1863.
Listed on December 1863 roll as AWOL.
Returned to duty and served till the end of the war.
Occupied as "wagoning" at age 30 on the 1870 Census for Lampasas
County, TX.
Martha died at Pecos, TX in 1884.
Involved in several mining claims near Pecos, TX in 1884 and 1889.
His son Jeptha Clayton Registered to vote in Naco, AZ in 1902. (Occ: Cowpuncher).
His son, John Brooks enlisted in the Arizona Rangers in Douglas on October
10, 1903.
John Brooks was promoted to Arizona Ranger Lieutenant on March 26, 1904.
Enlisted in the AZ Rangers in Naco, AZ on October 1, 1904, with occupation
listed as "stockman" and age curiously listed as 42.
Registered to vote in Naco, AZ in 1904. (There age listed as 55.)
Purchased town lots in Naco, AZ at this time.
Resigned less than a year later on January 7, 1905 and discharged from the
AZ Rangers on March 31, 1905. On his discharge Captain Rynning of the AZ Rangers
made the following citation: "excellent service, honest & faithful,
a good Ranger."
His son John Brooks resigned from AZ Rangers on July 6, 1905 and participated
in the Lucky Tiger mine expedition in Sonora, Mexico.
Married Doloras Ballesteros.
On June 26, 1907, while on the wagon trail from El Paso, TX, they had a son,
Ross Jr.
Family history indicates R. W. Brooks may have been ranching and mining in
Mexico.
John Brooks was ranching near Madera, Mexico. He was killed in Chihuahua,
Mexico in November 1912.
Sold the property in Naco, AZ in 1915.
Registered to vote in Douglas, AZ in 1916. (Address: 943 4th St., Occupation:
Miner, Nativity: Georgia, Party; Democrat, Height: 5'9", Weight: 140
lbs.)
Became a Police Officer in Douglas in June of 1916.
Involved in the line-of-duty shooting of Jose Mendez in July 1916 (Documented
in newspaper and court materials) - at age 77.
Registered to vote in Douglas, AZ in 1918 and May 1920. (Eyes: Blue, hair:
Brown Gray, Occupation: Police Officer).
Family history indicates his skull was crushed when ambushed on duty at the
Douglas Railway yard and a metal plate was placed in his head which led to
dimentia.
Registered to vote in May 1922. (Occupation is curiously listed as "Nothing,"
with the following notation, "Signed by Registering Officeer on account
of hand being paralyzed.")
Committed to the State Hospital in May 1923.
Died in the State Hospital on December 20, 1923 at age 84. Cause of death
listed as "Senile Psychosis, agitated type."
Buried in an unmarked grave at Greenwood Memory Lawn, Phoenix, Maricopa County,
AZ.
On November 2, 2002, a grave-marking ceremony was held in which a VA stone
and the Confederate Iron Cross were placed upon his grave. It was attented
by more than 30 family members from across the country.
