Served as a volunteer aide with Terry's Rangers in December 1861 through early 1862.
Enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant with Paul Anderson's Tennessee Company on July 15, 1862 at McMinnville, TN.
Helped organize a Tennessee Cavalry Company known as "Paul's People" or "Cedar Snags" on July 1, 1862.

The company served as an Escort Company for General Wharton July 1, to September 1, 1862.
the Company became Company K of the 8th Tennessee Cavalry (Baxter Smith's) on January 23, 1863.
J.H. Britton assumed command of the company on May 9, 1863 when Paul Anderson assumed command of the regiment.
Company on detached duty as an Escort Company for General Hood on March 30, 1864.
Promoted to Captain on July 28, 1863.

R. F. Bunting identifies Jim Britton as serving as volunteer aide in December 1861 and during the retreat from Kentucky in early 1862.
Claiborne identifies him in spring 1862 as co-founder with Paul F. Anderson of "Cedar Snag" company and later the 4th/8th Tennessee Cavalry.
