Benjamin Alexander Botts

January 17, 1831 - September 23, 1885


 

Born in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania County, VA on January 17, 1831.
Resided in Houston, Harris County, TX in 1860 with wife and one child; occupied as a merchant.

Appointed Assistant Regimental Quartermaster as Captain, probably on October 8, 1861, and at least by January 27, 1862.
Ceased position in February 24, 1862.
Enrolled N. J. Allen in Terry's Rangers on March 23, 1862 in New Orleans, LA.
Received 30-day furlough on April 9, 1862 due to acute bronchitis.
Recieved an extra 10 days leave on May 11, 1862.
On May 10, 1862 Wharton mentions that Captain Botts, his Quartermaster is in Corinth.
On August 11, 1862 Macmurphy mentions a "Draft on Capt. Botts."
NJ Allen's records indicate he was paid by a Maj. Botts on September 1, 1862.
Succedded by Alex C. Steel as Assistant regimental Quartermaster on November 18, 1862.
Appointed to General Wharton's staff as Captain, Assistant Quartermaster or acting Regimental Adjutant in November 1862.
General Polk ordered Major Botts to return to Duck River, TN with Wharton's wagon train on January 3, 1863.
On April 4, 1863 Macmurphy mentions a horse race with "Botts Sorrel."
Claiborne indicates he became a Major in an unidentified unit; however, he may have resumed Quartermaster duties with Terry's Rangers or different regiment in GA by February 1864.
Transferred to taxation department in TX, and left for TX in March 1864.
Member of Terry Lodge, regimental, Masonic chapter.

Served on the Masonic Committee on Work in 1868 with William M. Taylor, John B. Jones, C. K. Stribling, & James F. Miller.
President of the City Bank of Houston.
Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Texas, AF&AM in 1885.

Died September 23, 1885 at Houston, Harris County, TX.
