Fenton A. Bott
September 3, 1830 - May 2, 1908
Fenton A. Bott is a bit of a mystery. Records indicate he was born in Virginia in 1830. His father was Luke Bott but the identity of his mother is still unknown. On July 8, 1845, when Fenton would have been 14 years old, his father married Joanna Moore in Madison County, Missouri. The family emigrated to Texas in 1849. The 1850 census shows the family living as farmers in Travis County, Texas. On the 1860 census Fenton is shown to be living at home along with his older sister and younger brother.
When the war came, Fenton traveled to Houston where he enlisted with Company D of Terry's Texas Rangers on September 7,1861. Like many of the newly enlisted troops, he suffered from the illnesses that swept through the ranks. He was discharged on April 14, 1862 on account of "failing eyesight" and returned to Texas. Apparently he was unwilling to sit out the war, and reenlisted with Company H, 5th Texas Mounted Volunteers on October 8, 1862. Less than a year later, on September 4, 1863, he was once again discharged. Again he reenlisted, this time joining Company H, 2nd Regiment, Greens Brigade under Capt. Burris and served until the unit surrendered at war's end.
Joined for duty and enrolled on Sept. 7, 1861 at age 28, at Houston, TX by

Register of Payments to Discharged Soldiers, date of discharge April 14, 1862;
date of payment April 16, 1862 by G. P. Theobald
Present and pay due since enlistment - Sept. 7 to Oct. 31, 1861
Following the war, he returned home to Travis County, Texas. On the 1870
census he is shown to be living with his parents and working as a farmer.
The family is revealed to be living and farming in Williamson County Texas
on the 1880 Census.
In 1903, Fenton Bott moved to Ellis County, Texas. In February of 1906 he applied for and received a Confederate Pension from the state of Texas. In his application he states he has "no property except clothing - wearing apparel in use" and cites "general debility caused by age" as the reason for his need. Three months later he was admitted to the Confederate Home in Austin, Texas where he remained until his death on May 2, 1908. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetery.
