James Knox Polk Blackburn

February 20, 1837 - July 6, 1923


 

Born in Lynnville, Maury County, TN on Feb. 20, 1837.
Emigrated with family to TX in fall 1856.
Taught school in Fayette County, TX.
Taught school in Gonzales County, TX.
Attended the Alma Institute in Lavaca County, TX, where he was in 1861.

Joined with Ben McCulloch's force that compelled Twiggs to surrender in San Antonio, TX.

Enlisted in Lavaca County during August 1861.
Mustered into Company F at Houston, TX on September 7, 1861.
Contracted measles and sent to Hospital in Nashville.
Given a saber by J. H. Morgan for his valuable service during a scout at Murfreesboro.
Promoted to 1st Lieutenant, July 1862.
Took Command of Company F in April 1863.
Suffered gunshot wounds through both thighs while leading a charge at Farmington, TN on October 6, 1863.
Captured and paroled for hospitalization.
Recovererd in TN, where he met Matty Laird.
Returned to the Rangers in February 1865 but not exchanged until the end of the war.

Settled in Giles County, TN following the war.
Married Mary "Mackie" McMillan Laird on February 10, 1867 in Giles County, TN.
Elected a member of the TN House of Representatives in 1885.
Wife Mary Blackburn died in June 1901.
Elected a member of the TN State Senate in 1908.
Published "Remeniscences of the Terry Rangers" in Southwestern Historical Quarterly in 1918, which was republished as a book in 1919.
Died in Lynnville, TN on July 6, 1923.
Buried in the Lynnwood Cemetery, Lynnville, Giles County, TN.
