John William Baylor

Born in Bourbon County, KY on March 14, 1833.
Resided at Helena, Karnes County, TX in 1860; occupied as a stockraiser.
Mustered into Company C at Houston, TX on September 12, 1861.
Elected 3rd Lietenant.
On 1st Scout started Nov. 5th 1861 from Camp Johnston.
Sought medical discharge, but denied in January 1862.
Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant by October 1862.
Left in Middle TN by June 1863.
Promoted to Lieutenant by July 1863.
Suspected captured from at least December 1863 until at least January 1864
(possibly with O. E. Herbert, Co. F).
Led six man raid in early 1864 - Claiborne recorded that Baylor, with a detachment
of "six men[,] was cut off for 90 days was in the midst of the enemy,
loosing a part of his command."
Assumed dead by February 1864 - one source indicated "left in Middle
Tenn., supposed dead."
Thought to have been killed with party including R.
S. Davis, Co. E, near Sparta, TN in March 1864.
Member of Terry Lodge, Regimental, Masonic Chapter.
Died on December 12, 1878 at Montell, Uvalde County, TX.
