Samuel Swann Ashe

Born at Brownsville, TN on June 14, 1839.
Moved with his family to Galveston in 1848.
Educated at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Employed in Harrison County, TX as a rancher.
Resided at Lynchburg, Harris County, TX in 1860 with father and five siblings;
occupied as a farmer.
Mustered into Company B at Houston, TX on September 7, 1861.
Wounded in attack on stockade near McMinnville, TN on August 29, 1862.
Left at Woodbury, TN to recover.
Transferred to General Wharton's Scouts as 1st Lieutenant in December 1862
or January 1863.
Transfered to B. F. White's Artillery Battery as Lieutenant in March 1863.
Sought to transfer to General Wharton in March 1864, but apparently denied
according to Andy Jones Roster.
Promoted to Captain during the Atlanta Campaign.
Following the war, moved to Lynchburg and went into the mercantile business.
Married Sallie Anderson of Lebanon, TN on May 23, 1866.
Elected justice of the peace for Harris County, TX in 1870.
Elected sherrif of Harris County, TX in December 1873.
Elected tax collector in 1880.
Acted as clerk for the district criminal court in 1893, where he served until
1897.
Acted as a witness for pension application of J. M. Weston, Co. H.
Died April 29, 1919.
