Dr. Powhattan Archer

1827 - 1863


 

Powhattan Archer was born in 1827. He received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1846 (he attended 1844-1846). A University of Pennsylvania Alumni document lists Archer's father as Brauch Archer; his place of birth as Brazovia County, Texas; and
his cause and place of death as a skirmish in or near Russellville, Kentucky, on 2 July 1863.

1842 3 months service in Capt. John C. Hay's Company; under General Somerville

24 December 1855 Petition to Texas Legislature for public lands grant;

He resided in Brazoria County Texas.
In September 1861 he enlisted with Company B of the 8th Texas Cavalry in Houston. Listed his age as 34
Last record April 1863. Claiborne lists him as killed in KY, July 1863. May have been with Wharton's Scouts under the command of G. L. Gordon.

Physician; member of Virginia House of Burgesses, 1819-20; served in the Texas Army during the Texas War of Independence; member of Texas Republic House of Representatives, 1836; Texas Republic Secretary of War, 1840-41. Member, Freemasons. Died in Brazoria, Brazoria County, Tex., September 22, 1856. Interment at Restwood Memorial Park, Clute, Tex. Archer County, Tex. is named for him.
