Isaac Dunbar Affleck

October 24, 1844 - April 18, 1919


 

Born at Washington, MS on October 24, 1844.
Son of noted Southern agricultural reformer Thomas Affleck, who published "Southern Rural Almanac and Plantation and Garden Calendar."
Came to TX with family in 1858.
Resided at Gay Hill, Washington County, TX in 1860 with parents and one sibling, occupied as a student.
Attended Bastrop Military Institute, 1859 to 1861.

Initially a member of Labadie's Rifles.
Mustered into Company B at Houston, TX on March 11, 1862.
Reached regiment after April 8, 1862.
Discharged in May 1863 by giving a substitute.
Acted as civilian clerk to General J. B. Magruder from December 1863 to February 1864.
Joined General Wharton's cavalry in May 1864.

Married Mary Foster Hunt of KY on December 26, 1876.
Studied politics, science, and Texas history and contributed frequently to the press.
Made intensive study of ants. Part of his findings on the Texas agricultural ant and the cutting ant are contained in H. M. McCook's The Natural History of the Agricultural Ant of Texas (1880).
Edited August Santleben's A Texas Pioneer in 1910.
Died at Austin, TX on April 18, 1919.
Buried at Brenham, TX.
