Andrew Jackson Adams
1833 - 1899
Sources indictate Jack Adams was born in Alabama on January 8, 1833. (It is believed Frank may have been born in Lynchburg, Virginia when he was very young and then raised in Alabama.) His father was James Chamber Adams. His mother is unidentified but there is a record of a James C. Adams being married to Caroline Bohannon on January 3, 1825 in Greene County, Alabama. His father married Margaret Campbell on October 24, 1849 in Clarke County, Alabama.
Jack and his brothers, Frank, Duff, and Young, came to Texas in 1856 and settled in Fort Bend County. The 1860 US Census for Fort Bend county, Texas shows Jack and Frank operating a plantation near Stafford. It also shows a Young Adams at a hotel in Richmond, Texas.
His brothers, Frank and Duff,
enlisted with with Company "H" of Terry's Texas Rangers in Houston
on September 7, 1861. Frank became ill and returned home in April 1862. Jack
Adams was enlisted as a private by Captain Cook in Richmond, TX on May 14,
1862. It is quite possible he enlisted as a substitute for Frank. His last
official record lists him as present with the regiment in March 1864. He was
severely wounded in the arm near Waynesboro, GA on December 4, 1864. He was
paroled at Meridian, MS on May 12,1865.
Following the war he returned home to Fort Bend county, TX. On January 31,
1872 he married Collumbia Ballard in Harris County, TX. The 1880 census shows
him working as a farmer in Fort Bend County. Among those listed in the household
is his brother Young and his two children.
In 1885, Lorenza Dowden Hibbard, A.J. Adams, and P. Coalson, served as trustees on a parcel of land in Fort Bend County that was set aside to have a church and school built upon it. It is uncertain if this AJ Adams is Andrew Jackson Adams or not.
Jack Adams died on January 10, 1899 in Stafford, TX and was buried at the Morton Cemetery in Richmond, TX.
