Confederate Indigent Families Lists (1863-1865). In December 1863 the Texas Legislature passed the "Act to Support the Families and Dependents of Texas Soldiers." One million dollars was set aside annually to distribute to the families of soldiers who were in active service, had died in the war or had been disabled because of the war. Chief Justices of the counties compiled lists of thos eligible for aid.

Texas Adjutant General's Dept: Civil War records. These records include correspondence, military orders, monthly returns, records of the sick and wounded, reports of guards, morning reports, pay vouchers, reports and payrolls of hired persons, tax-in-kind records, and quartermaster records (contracts, vouchers, statements, estimates of funds required, receipts of public funds, and various abstracts). They comprise the Civil War-era records of the Texas State Troops (including Frontier Regiment and Mounted Regiment records); certain records of the Confederate States Army; and certain records of Union forces in Texas. Dates covered are 1855, 1860-1866 (bulk 1861-1865). 16.94 ft.

Texas Confederate Pension Applications This Index provides the names, county of residence, and pension number of some 54,634 approved, rejected, and home pensions issued by the Texas government between 1899 and 1975.

1867 Voters' Registration. The Reconstruction Act of March 13, 1867 required the commanding officer in each military district to have, before September 1, a registration of all qualified voters in each county. These lists was used to determine all who would be eligible to vote for any proposed Constitutional Convention in the state. 12 reels.

Governor F rancis Richard Lubbock Papers. Types of records are correspondence, proclamations, petitions, appointments, resolutions, broadsides, receipts, messages to the Legislature, letterpress copybooks, orders, vouchers, and lists, dating from 1861 to 1904, undated (bulk 1861-1863). Materials are mainly the records of Francis R. Lubbock as governor of Texas, but also include a few letters dating from his service as a lieutenant colonel in the Confederate States Army and as state treasurer. 2.36 ft.

Governor Edward Clark papers. Types of records are correspondence, petitions, clippings, minutes, reports, proclamations, resolutions, circulars, passports, recommendations, requisitions, proceedings, and wrappers, dating from March 4, 1861 to November 27, 1861. Records were created during Edward Clark's term as governor of Texas, March 16, 1861 to November 7, 1861. 1.19 ft. (Jno. A. Wharton to EC on July 18, 1861. Jno. A. Wharton to EC on Aug. 4, 1861. Governor James Webb Throckmorton Papers. Types of records are correspondence, petitions, and lists, dating from October 1866 to December 1867. Records are of Governor James Throckmorton's term in office. Although the majority of the records are incoming letters, several outgoing letters are found. Much of the confusion that accompanied the imposition of military rule in reconstructing Texas in March 1867 is reflected in the correspondence. 1.18 ft.

Governer Edmund Jackson Davis Papers. Types of records include correspondence, proclamations, messages to and from the Texas Senate and House of Representatives, telegrams, orders, petitions from citizens of various counties, wrappers, and letterpress books, dating from 1869 to 1874. Documents are records of E.J. Davis' tenure as governor of Texas during Reconstruction. 15.5 ft.

Shannon-Scott Family Papers, 1848-1942. MS 250. The collection consists of photocopies of the original letters, documents and photographs still in the possession of the donor(s). There are some typed transcripts of letters. There is a handwritten inventory describing the contents of the more interesting letters located in the control folder. Some of the photocopies are difficult to read due to the poor copy quality. 2 in.

Cornelius Kinchelo Stribling Papers, 1861-1960 4 microfilm reels. Consists of correspondence, genealogical data, literary productions (1861-1960), and scrapbook material. Also includes a biographical sketch of Cornelius Stribling, masonic lodge records (1861-1862), and a biographical sketch of Texas Ranger, B. F. (Dock) Burris. A cattle inspector, surveyor, land agent, lawyer, judge, and state legislator, Stribling moved to Washington County, Texas in 1841. He was a member of the Masonic order beginning in 1854. He married Callie Grover in 1859 and joined the Texas Rangers in 1862. He married Nancy Carolina Stribling after the Civil War. Stribling ranched in Throckmorton County until his death in 1918.

Eula M. Haskew Papers 1875 - 1975. Reel A contains newsclippings and Haskew's personal notes, as well as correspondence, photographs, and related material concerning Cornelius Kinchelo Stribling and George A. Kirkland. Reel B contains personal notes, newsclippings, and correspondence, plus a series of articles by Eula Haskew entitled "Out of Yesterday's Mailbag," concerning information on Stribling, Terry's Texas Rangers, and Fort Griffin. 2 microfilm reels.

George W. Littlefield Papers 1860-1922. Contains correspondence, financial and legal material, and autobiographical material. George Washington Littlefield was born June 21, 1842, and died November 10, 1920. He owned a cotton plantation in Gonzales, Texas, and served in the Civil War under Albert Sydney Johnson (Terry's Rangers), rising to the rank of Major. Littlefield owned several ranches in Texas and New Mexico. In 1901, with his nephews, J.P. and T.P. White, he bought the Yellow House Ranch from the Capitol Syndicate. Littlefield founded the American National Bank in Austin, served on the University of Texas Board of Regents, and donated over $2,000,000 to the University of Texas. 7 microfilm reels.

Noelke Family Photograph Collection, 1870-1918. Consists of photographs of the Noelke family and the W.A. Hadden family.In 1846, Ferdinand Noelke arrived in Texas from Hacher, Germany. During the Civil War, he served in Terry's Rangers. In 1872, Noelke married Alice Blackwell and began ranching. By 1891, the family had settled in Irion County, Texas, where their sons established prominent sheep and goat raising operations. Members of the Noelke family still raise sheep, goats and cattle in the area where Ferdinand settled. SWCPC 51 . 83 copy prints.

Parramore Family Photograph collection, 1880 - 1941. Consists of photographs of Dock Dilworth Parramore's sketches. Parramore's sketches are included in his book titled, The Parramore sketches: scenes and stories of early West Texas., and was published by the Texas Western Press (University of Texas at El Paso) in 1975. James H. Parramore, a Terry Ranger, began cattle ranching in Runnels County, Tex. in 1879. His twin sons, Dock Dilworth and Jack, ranched in Sterling and King counties of Texas. Southwest Collection Reference Files Contain over 18,000 folders of information about West Texas (Lubbock and the South Plains in particular), Texas Tech, and the Southwestern United States in general (Arizona, New Mexico, etc...). Bunting, Robert Franklin Papers (1861?-). Composed of typed copies of 97 Civil War Letters, a diary, and writings of Reverend Robert Franklin Bunting (1828-1891), and some writings of his son, Henry S. Bunting. Originals of Rev. R. F. Bunting's letters are in the University of Texas library. 5 in.

Cheairs and Hughes Family Papers (1636-1967). Centered on Nathaniel F. Cheairs (1818-1914), 3rd Tennessee Infantry, Civil War staff officer, and businessman of Spring Hill. Cheairs carried the surrender message from Gen. Simon B. Buckner to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Fort Donelson in February, 1862. Many of the letters relate to his Civil War experiences, including his ordeal as a prisoner of war. (Liddell, St. John R. to D.G. White, 1862, re: report on the equipment and conditions of the regiment of the Texas Rangers.) 1.68 ft. TSLA Mf. 1178, 1 reel, 16 mm.

William Mark Eames Papers, (1862-1864). Centered around William Mark Eames (1827-1884), Civil War Surgeon, of Ashtabula, Ohio. (Correspondence from W. M. Eames to M. J. Eames, February 25 - September 27, 1862 includes report of raid on Murfreesboro by Forrest, tracking Rebel cavalry, and encounter with Texas Rangers under truce to exchange prisoners.) 5 in. Captain John Morton Scrapbook Collection. 5 vols. Collection of scrapbooks containing material primarily on the Civil War, with emphasis on Captain John Morton and his career as General Nathan Bedford Forrest's artillery chief. Three of the scrapbooks concern the battles and campaigns of cavalry wizard Forrest, in which Morton played a leading role. TSLA Mf. 948. 1 reel. 35 mm.

United Confederate Veterans. Tennessee Division. Bivouac Records, 1887-1925. Compilation of iems donated from various United Confederate veteran (UCV) bivouacs and individuals. The records are composed largely of bivouac membership applications, with a few rosters and minute books, one volume of financial records, and some correspondence regarding applications. Several volumes concern the UCV reunions held in 1897 and 1904, and include registers of attendance at the reunions. One addition consists of materials and minutes relating to the activities of Forrest's Cavalry Corps; another of applications from the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Tennessee Division.
The records are arranged alphabetically by the name of the town in which the bivouac was located. 5 cubic feet. TSLA Mf. 1548, 8 reels. 35 mm.

Tennessee Confederate Pension Applications: Soldiers & Widows Includes accepted and rejected pension applications, arranged by application number. Includes personal history and supporting papers attesting to the veteran's character and military service. (James W. Hill # S1849, S. J. Page # S16214, John T. Nelson # S14570.) TSLA Mf., 173 reels.

Tennessee Civil War Veterans' Questionnaires, ca. 1800-1922. 1700 items.
Collection consists of questionnaires which were sent to all known living Civil War veterans in Tennessee in 1914-15 and 1920, and returned by 1922. The questionnaires they returned contain information regarding date and place of birth; date and place of enlistment; company and regiment; war service, including descriptions of battles and prison life; economic and social status of the soldier and his family; genealogical, educational and religious data; and occupation before and after the war. Several questionnaires contain additional descriptive material. An invaluable resource for the social history of Tennessee's Civil War soldiers. (James K.P. Confederate Military and Financial Board. Nashville, TN Records, 1861. 2 vols.
Records of the Confederate Military and Financial Board, based in Tennnessee. This board had authority over early military operations, ordered the building of Forts Donelson and Henry, and generally supervised the provisioning of supplies for western Confederate army operations. Volume I consists primarily of letters and orders emanating from this military supply board for the western theatre of Confederate operations. These documents predate the capture of Nashville by Federal forces in February of 1862. Volume II consists of telegrams, many of which concern efforts to supply the Confederate army in the Tennessee area with war material. TSLA. Mf. 623, 1 reel. 35 mm.

Index and Register of Appointments of Officers, Confederate, 1861-1864. 2 vols.
Confederate records, compiled by the U.S. War Department, consisting of an index and register of appointments of officers who served in the Adjutant and Inspector General's office. This would include quartermaster, ordnance, artillery, military court and other organizations outside the regular infantry and cavalry units. The type of information found includes the date of appointment and confirmation of officers and the state from which they served. TSLA Mf. 1478, 1 reel. 35 mm.
